CQT is pleased to welcome four new Principal Investigators. Gong Jiangbin, Patrick Rebentrost, Steven Touzard and Gao Weibo will lead groups working across the Centre’s research areas of quantum computation and simulation, quantum communication and security, quantum sensing and metrology, advanced instruments and basic science. With their appointments, there are now 28 Principal Investigators working at CQT.

Jiangbin brings to CQT a wealth of experience in quantum dynamics. New insights into the dynamics of quantum systems can help us understand the long-standing quantum-classical transition and lead to better strategies towards quantum computation and simulation, quantum learning, and energy conversion at the nanoscale. Jiangbin is also currently Provost’s Chair Professor and Head of Department at the NUS Department of Physics, where he has researched a variety of topics including quantum dynamics control, quantum simulation, topological phases of matter, quantum thermodynamics and quantum chaos.

Patrick is appointed Principal Investigator and Research Assistant Professor from his former position as Senior Research Fellow at CQT. His research interests are in quantum computing, quantum algorithms, quantum machine learning, learning theory, and mathematical finance. He received a grant in April 2022 from the Quantum Engineering Programme to lead a project, “Computer science approaches to quantum computing for finance.”

Steven, a former CQT Research Fellow, will build a new experimental group at CQT working on quantum network technologies. He shares an appointment as a Presidential Young Professor at the NUS Department of Physics and Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He also received a Fellowship from the National Research Foundation, class of 2022, for research on “Building quantum networks of superconducting circuits mediated by telecom photons”.

Weibo has expertise in quantum photonics and quantum materials. At the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, where he is Associate Professor and Provost’s Chair Professor in Physics, Weibo has established an experimental group working on two-dimensional materials, quantum information and quantum optics based on solid state systems. He leads two projects launched since 2021 under the Quantum Engineering Programme: “Island-wide quantum key distribution using electrically driven single photon emitters” and “Quantum sensing for health science based on NV centers in diamond”.

Our new PIs will be giving talks during CQT’s Conference Day on 4 August. The conference is organised for the visit of CQT’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) to provide updates from the Centre. Researchers in quantum technologies in Singapore are welcome to attend the conference. More details and how to register can be found at: https://conference.quantumlah.org/

Look out as well for our interviews with our new PIs to learn more about them and their research.
