CQT in the news: “Weirdness for the brave”

7 October 2010

CQT is in the news this week. In a piece titled “Dziwność dla zuchwałych” (approximately translating to “Weirdness for the brave”*), journalist Karol Jalochowski has written poetically about his visit to CQT for the science section of the weekly Polish-language news magazine Polityka. The article and a companion video piece appear on the magazine's website.

The video, shot around Singapore and at CQT, shows scenes ranging from the city skyline to close-ups of experiments in the Centre’s experimental labs. It features some interviews in English. Follow the link to hear CQT’s Director Artur Ekert discuss the “sense of enormous possibilities” in Singapore and contributions from researchers Kwek Leong Chuan, Christian Kurtsiefer, Dagomir Kaszlikowski, Tomasz Paterek, Pawel Kurzynski, Valerio Scarani, Kai Dieckmann and Murray Barrett.

As for the text, it opens at a bar showing football, where CQT scientists are emptying a jug of beer. The match is boring but the physicists are happy, Jalochowski writes, when a score table comes up and they see the 1s and 0s that are the daily bread for quantum information scientists who think in terms of bits. He describes CQT as a place that attracts eccentric and talented young physicists, and notes that the Centre’s pursuit of fundamental research symbolises a new strategy supported by traditionally pragmatic Singapore.

* Dziwność dla zuchwałych is a play on Złoto dla zuchwałych, the polish title of the 1970 film Kelly's Heroes, which starred Clint Eastwood as one of a band of US soldiers in World War II plotting to steal gold from the Germans. Złoto is Polish for gold.
